What is Coffee?

Coffee is a widely consumed drink made by infusing roasted coffee beans — the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant — with hot water. The grounds are rich in oils, flavors, and caffeine content obtained from this extraction.

A dynamic final product can be presented in a number of ways, for example: drip coffee, French press or cold brew. With bold flavors, and many different strengths achievable depending on how it is brewed, it is also distinct for its aroma.

What is Espresso?

Espresso is essentially strong coffee. It is prepared by passing a small amount of almost boiling water through very finely powdered coffee beans at a very high pressure. The outcome is a very thick and strong coffee that has crema (foamy cream) formed on its top.

A large number of famous drinks are based on espresso, such as lattes and cappuccinos. Served differently from regular coffee, espresso comes in smaller portions; usually one ounce of the drink, but the taste is far more powerful with much more caffeine content per ounce.

Coffee vs. Espresso: Which Has More Caffeine?

coffee

Regular Coffee, on the other hand, is less concentrated. An 8-ounce (240-milliliter) cup of brewed coffee typically contains around 95 milligrams of caffeine.

While this amount is higher than a single shot of espresso, it is spread over a larger volume.

In summary, espresso has a higher caffeine concentration per ounce, but because coffee is generally consumed in larger quantities, a standard cup of coffee usually ends up providing more total caffeine than a single shot of espresso.

When comparing the caffeine content of coffee and espresso, it’s important to consider both the serving size and the concentration.

Espresso is much more concentrated than regular coffee. A standard serving of espresso, which is about 1 ounce (30 milliliters), contains approximately 63 milligrams of caffeine.

This high concentration means that espresso has more caffeine per ounce compared to coffee.

Espresso vs. Coffee: Key Differences in Roast, Grind, and Brew

The difference between espresso and regular coffee lies in their roasting, grinding and brewing processes.
If you are still not very clear about the difference between espresso and regular coffee, we MHW-3BOMBER give you a more detailed and intuitive comparison, so that you can understand more thoroughly before making coffee.

Roasting

Espresso is usually roasted to a darker degree. This darker roast enhances the full-bodied flavor and reduces acidity, which is ideal for the intense character of espresso. The roasting process for espresso beans usually emphasizes caramelization and thicker coffee oils.

Regular drip coffee beans can be roasted to various degrees, from light to dark. Light roasting retains more of the original flavor and acidity of the bean, while darker roasting provides a richer, fuller flavor. The degree of roasting can significantly affect the final flavor of the coffee.

Grinding coffee2

Grinding

Espresso requires a very fine grind. A fine grind is essential because it allows the water to extract flavors quickly and efficiently in a short extraction time, usually around 25-30 seconds. The size of the grind is essential for generating the right pressure and obtaining the characteristic coffee oils.

Regular coffee is usually brewed using a coarser grind for brewing methods such as drip or French press. The grind size may vary depending on the brewing method - medium for drip coffee, coarse for French press coffee and medium-fine for hand brewed coffee. A coarser grind helps prevent over-extraction and bitterness during these longer brews.

Brewing

Espresso is brewed using a specialized machine that presses hot water at high pressure (about 9 bar) over finely ground coffee. This method produces a small, strong coffee with a rich layer of coffee oils. The brewing time is short, usually about 25-30 seconds.

Regular coffee is brewed by a variety of methods including drip, hand brewing, French press or cold brew. Each method has its own brewing time and water temperature. For example, drip coffee makers usually brew coffee in 4-6 minutes, while French press coffee needs to steep for about 4 minutes. These methods extract flavors more slowly than espresso.

Summary
Espresso: deep roasting, very fine grinding, high pressure extraction, short brewing time.
Coffees: varying degrees of roasting (light to dark), coarser grinds, different brewing methods and times.
Each method produces a unique flavor and consistency to satisfy different preferences and uses.

Do Espresso and Coffee Use Different Beans?

In short, it's the same. Espresso and regular coffee can be made from the same type of coffee beans, the key difference being, as mentioned above, the way they are processed and brewed.

Both espresso and regular coffee can be made from the same variety of coffee beans, such as Arabica or Robusta. The choice of beans depends on personal preference and the desired flavor profile.

A medium roast won't have the same intensity or reach of flavor as a dark or espresso roast, but you can still grind them super fine to get a consistency suitable for the espresso brewing method.

Essentially, while the beans themselves can be the same, the degree of roasting and size of the grind will be adjusted to suit the espresso or regular coffee brewing method.

How to Make Espresso?

We at MHW-3BOMBER offer you the MHW-3BOMBER Manual Lever Espresso Machine Sonic S7, a manual espresso machine designed for novices and seasoned enthusiasts alike to unleash unique flavors and enhance your coffee experience.

Basic Steps to Make Espresso
Grind the Beans:
Use a burr grinder to grind the coffee beans to a fine consistency, similar to table salt.

Preheat the Machine: Turn on your espresso machine and allow it to reach the optimal brewing temperature, usually around 190-200°F (88-93°C).

Prepare the Portafilter: Remove the bottomless portafilter from the machine. Add the ground coffee to the portafilter. For a double shot, use about 18-20 grams of coffee.

Tamp the Grounds: Use a coffee tamper to press the coffee grounds evenly and firmly into the portafilter, creating a smooth and level surface. Aim for about 30 pounds of pressure.

Brew the Espresso: Lock the portafilter into the machine. Start the brewing process. The espresso should flow steadily, taking about 25-30 seconds to extract 1-2 ounces (30-60 ml) of espresso.

Serve Immediately: Espresso is best enjoyed fresh. Serve it in a pre-warmed cup to maintain its temperature and crema.
